For those who did not hear the sad news, Eric Hultmark's wife of nearly 19 years, Ann Marie, lost her valiant battle with cancer at the end of February. The funeral was held on Martha's Vineyard, where Ann Marie's family is from, on Thursday, March 4th. Several classmates, including Jean, were able to attend. As Jean described it, "The number of Coast Guard people ( officer, enlisted and civilian ) at the ceremony was a real testament to the lives Eric & Ann Marie touched during their years in the Boston area. Eric's eulogy was a beautiful tribute to Ann Marie and their life together that left no eye in the church dry and no heart untouched. Even the sun came out on a dreary day to lighten the trip from the church to the cemetery. Ann Marie was clearly a special young woman."

By now Bruce Toneyshould be thawing out from his trip to the bottom of the earth this winter. Bruce's adventures as the XO of the Polar Star are detailed at www.polarstar.org.

It looks like Pete Hoffman has been recalled to active duty, at least that is what his e-mail account returns as a message. Has anyone seen Pete in uniform lately?
We could also use a report on Paul Guinee's retirement ceremony in DC in March. Best wishes to both Pete and Paul as they move into new lines of work.
Doug Cochran finished his MBA at Shenandoah University this winter. DougDoug visited New London in May as a volunteer member of the liberty ship John W. Brown. He is the head of the Naval Historical Detachment and sails on the ship as it makes port calls to remind people of the role of the Liberty Ships during WWII. Jean & I remember visiting the John W. Brown a few summers back (it is an amazing "living museum" thanks to the support of folks such as Doug). Bravo Zulu to Doug and his crew for preserving this part of our American maritime heritage.
Mary Jager retired from the Coast Guard and is now working for TSA. She enjoys her new job running a TSA Division that validates business plans. The office reviews the plans with an eye towards performance management and measurement. Charlie is looking to retire in June and is hoping to keep working in the DC area. With his computer skills, I'm sure there are many bidders out there for his talent.
Charlie sent the following message,
"Since we're approaching another period of transition (retirements and PCS transfers) I'm sending this message to let everyone know how you can still remain in touch with your classmates by sending and receiving e-mail messages to the entire group. We set up the CGA 83 newsgroup as a self-service feature. In other words, rather than having a couple of people maintain, and worse yet try to reconcile different lists of e-mail addresses, everyone can maintain their own information in a single list. I think that we have a fairly comprehensive and accurate list of email addresses, but if you don't keep your information current, then the usefulness of that list will slowly dissolve.
is a Quality Engineer with Quality Systems Applications, Inc. and his company provides support to the Navy on the Aegis Destroyer class new construction program.
Thanks Charlie! This is a great service as it allows instant access to all. Please take Charlie's suggestion and sign-in. We recently changed our home e-mail, so I updated the list while doing these notes. One e-mail message and it's done.To add your new e-mail address to the group list, just send a message from the address you want to add. It doesn't matter what you type in the subject line or the text of the message.
Send it to: cga83news-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
To remove your current e-mail address from the group list, just send an e-mail from the address that you want to remove. It doesn't matter what you type in the subject line or the text of the message.
Send it to: cga83news-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com.
If you added your e-mail address to the CGA83 group list, then you can send a message to everyone on the list. Send it to: cga83news@yahoogroups.com."
In the small world category, for years I've been involved in outreach robotics projects pairing cadets with technically interested High School students (who hopefully then become cadets). This year the team wanted to use gyros to keep the robot going straight. They did their research and came up with the ideal gyro for their application, designed and manufactured by Janelle Oveson'scompany Analog Devices. After buying the gyro, I let Janelle know of the AD-CGA link and she immediately offered lots of help to the team. It ends up that the CGA robot won a control award for their work with Janelle'sJanelle's gyro for robot navigation and anti-tipping supervisory control, see www.CGAteamUSA.org.
Cheers for all of '83. gyro. It is nice to see the long arms of the CGA-83 network at work. Just to prove that these robot competitions are not all fun and games, I¹ve included a photo with one of the other competitors. For more information on the cadet work, including a white paper on how to use
