Congratulations to Jackie & Nick Stagliano on the birth of their son Ryan Joseph: 8 lbs. 5 oz., 20.5 in., born July 21, 2004. According to Nick, big brothers Evan and Eric and big sister Taylor are thrilled with the little fella. Nice to know there are 83-derivatives available for future CGA classes down the road.

As I write this I just had lunch with Keith & Kathy Curran and their daughter Brittany during CGA Parents Weekend. Keith is getting a unique view of CGA now in his fourth role - cadet, instructor, Eagle XO, and now parent.

Kudos to Molly (Kriz) Riordan on ber selection to the USCGA Athletic Hall of Fame. Molly is the second (Kyle Moore was inducted in 2003) '83er - first woman - to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and the class is immensely proud of her success. The CGA-locals are looking forward to Molly's

More west coast news: Rod Smith moved from CG Officer Rod to CG Civilian Rod at the summer's end when he moved from being XO of ISC Alameda to a civilian position at the MLC Pacific Shore Division. Rod joked that his biggest adjustment so far has been coordinating his shirt and tie. Best wishes, Rod, working for the new group.

Word from another ISC XO came in via John Odell. DJ Smith (CO of CGC Active), Dow Weber (Port Engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers in Portland, OR) and John attended the Change of Command aboard CGC Polar Sea in Seattle when CAPTBruce Toney took command. Bruce is the second member of the class to take command of a major cutter (Mike Tekesky took command of Hamilton in July). Hats off to Bruce and Mike!

From Hawaii, we have a report that the Cutts family made it from Boston to Honolulu in one piece. Made it back to ISC Honolulu via Philmont this summer.

In Matt's words,
induction over homecoming weekend this dear. Way to go, Molly!
"Got to skip shaving for 12 days, and kept up (barely) with Zach and Josh on the 60 mile trek. The photo shows the three of us on top of the Tooth of Time at 9003 feet above sea level. Glad to be back in the surf zone with Ellen and the kids, and to be around Mark Porvaznik, Bert Diehl, Gerry Dostie, Fred Tucher ... and Tracy (Parr!) DeVoe."
Aloha-83 to all 83-islanders.

Still on that side of the world, Jim Ylanan sent a nice note and some photos from the Phillipines. Jim visited with Mike Morales at the Philippine Military Academy where he is a member of the permanent teaching staff. Mike hosted the group with his homemade pizza and carrot cake.

As Jim said,

"For a math and computer science professor, I could say that it was excellent. In the photo taken last June, from left to right are: Mike, his wife Yayang with the puppy, my wife Grace with our youngest Jan, Avery our oldest, me, my niece Kate, her Dad Choi, her sisters: Jessica and Celine, and their mother who is also my wife's sister Annie."

Ernie Malapo, Jim Ylanan and Ponsoy, a common friend from their days at the Philippine Military Academy.
Remember Ernie Malapo? Well, Ernie gave Jim a surprise visit in Cebu, Phillipines last July. Ernie worked for Ericsson for years and was assigned to Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and finally the US. He left the company about a year ago to set up and run his own consultancy firm somewhere in Northern California. In the photo we can see Ernie, Jim and Ponsoy, a friend from their days at the Philippine Military Academy. Ernie also sent along a cute photo with his two new babies both named Francis.

From faithful correspondent Terry Gilbreath:

Sally & I have moved to Thibodaux, LA, where I have taken over as Captain of the Port of Morgan City, LA. Grace is a freshman in high school and Patrick is in 6th grade. She is playing goalie on a travel soccer team in New Orleans (with Frank Paskewich's ('81) daughter Katie), so we keep busy with boy scouts, soccer and life.

I ran into Lincoln Stroh last week in New Orleans. He is the Captain of the Port of Corpus Christi and was in New Orleans for a conference. Tracy and the family moved from Huntington, WV, a couple of months ago. He had driven to New Orleans as he was delivering his daughter's car to a college in Chatanooga, TN, where she is a freshman. I believe she got a scholarship in Volleyball. Lincoln just completed a year at the Brookings Institution in DC (geo bachelor) and was happy to get back with his family.

I talk with Todd Gentile a few times a month. He is doing great in New Orleans. We will have to dynamite him out of the area.

Dave Gordner was in Kentucky a couple of months ago and I got to accompany him to the Kentucky Motor Speedway. Dave is the point man for the Coast Guard racing team. He has been to most of the races and now has NASCAR in his blood. Look for him in the future. His oldest daughter Becky did an internship at HQ this summer and lived with Dave

I keep in pretty close contact with Liam Slein, but have not, heard from him since moving to Miami. He is the Deputy Sector Commander at Sector Miami having moved there from MSO/Group Philadelphia. I am sure he is quite busy.

Tom Cullen is now in District 11 as the Chief of SAR. He relieved Dave Swatland. He & Mary made a crazy cross-country trip from Cape Cod to California with the 5 kids in a pop-up camper. I am sure he had a blast."
in DC. She is a student at the University of Virginia.
Thanks, Terry - nice to know we have a southern connection to keep us all up to date.

And finally, the Fishler family spent their summer vacation (over the July 4th holiday) in Cape May, NJ.

While there, we were able to hook up with the Macalusos for a cook out. They live right outside the gate to the Training Center. It was amazing how John and I (roommates at CGA) seemed to pick up our conversation right where we had left off. I was actually wondering if Raul and/or Stan
Anyway, after dinner, we walked over to the Training Center and caught the evening parade. My kids were impressed, but not ready to `sign up.'
would show up (they didn't) to do some "Spiderman" tricks hanging off the doors or street posts. It was great to get together.

"The Future of America" - Laura (10), Giuliana (9) and Emma (5) Macaluso with Stephen (9) and Michael (5) Fishler. (Notice the CG Water Tower as the backdrop.)
A good set of notes, thanks to the efforts of a number of classmates writing in. Feel free to drop a note yourself so we can all keep tabs.

In the meantime, best wishes - Vince & Jean.
